Well, it’s 4am on a Weds and I’ve not been able to sleep. My right foot is blazing with pain. Nothing is going to take away the agony. I ran out of Ibuprofen yesterday and foolishly didn’t pick up more.
I’ve been here before.
This is the third time since January I’ve buggered my ankles. It happened last Weds while I was walkingyes, fecking WALKING home from the train station. I know this because I woke up the next in pain. Not as bad as tonight but enough to make me dig out my walking stick.
However, I was on the mend. Till today.
See, part of my job involves visiting sites that will be impacted by proposed infrastructure projects. Today, it was to look at a silo in west London. I had strapped my foot up and placed it in a comfy pair of fine safety boots. Off we trooped.
The guy who owns the silo led the way. And when we got to the roof, he tripped over a cable duct. Why? Well, it’s a grey duct on a grey silo covered in grey dust. Or as I think of it now, an invisibility cloak.
What happened next is predictable. I tripped over a grey vent pipe with my bad foot and felt something go. I got home and since then have been in absolute agony. The pain was so bad I think I went into light shock – I was absolutely freezing and had to find two duvets.
At the moment, I am crippled. I can’t let this keep happening. I need to work on making my joints more resilient. Here’s my current plan:
1. Ditch he shoes that are causing the problem – they are the common link here
2. Do strength training – I’ve got a resistance band and a balance board.
3. Get back to Pilates
At the moment, life’s grind is on top of me. And I’m pretty bored with it; my health issues, the broken cooker (meaning I have to eat out a lot), sorting out the flat. And now my safe release – running – isn’t available to me through chronic injury.
It sucks. And blows. And that’s why I am going to get through it and get resilient so I can stop suffering like this.
Till next time: don’t let the bastards grind you down and keep on going
