Last week’s a bad one for my training plan. A combination of factors led me to not give a flying feck last week. Some weeks, it’s all pants!
Hillwalking in the Yorkshire Dales
Last week, I went to Leeds to visit my good friends Keith and Sally. Keith and I worked together many years ago and have stayed in touch. Sally is his (much) better half. As well as good company, good food and good exercise with a decent ‘yomp’, Sally also dishes out free stretching advice. (One of her many strings to her bow is as pilates instructor). She’s forever finding something wrong with me and giving me tips on how to fix it.
So, Saturday last was the big hike over hill and dale. We went to a place near Bolton Abbey. It’s fair to say I was knackered afterwards – there was some steep climbing in terrible weather. But it was excellent – really enjoyable. However, as well as being tired, I was left foot sore and tender. This continued into the next day when I got home. So I thought I’d reschedule my long run to the Monday, as I planned to work from home.
Insomnia and I are old enemies. Occasionally, there were times where I would have weeks of struggle getting to sleep. This was before I learned to destress and clear my mind. After that, it was usually from highly emotional periods of life (such as my NZ experiences). This week was quite different in form, but the same in affect. I was going to sleep OK but not sleeping through – waking at about 2am before dropping off again shortly before getting up time. The affect was the same – being knackered all week.
This doubled up my problems. I was too tired to go running but couldn’t stay asleep to rest to go running. And repeat. This got worse as I then started making bad nutrition choices (honestly, it doesn’t take much for my will power to evaporate) which then fed into my insomnia. This was because I was then awake from sore stomach or disturbed by booze.
It was all very infuriating and my training plan went out the window. Pants.
Well, I am where I am and it is what it is. A bad week last week. However, despite my pants training past week, I’m going to forget about it and move on.
This week’s plan is to:
- Run total of 54km between Monday and Sunday
- Aiming for a 5k/5k tempo/12.5k/6.5k/25k LSR
- But I might break that up a bit with a few other short runs
Till next time, keep on going.
